Overview: Princess Mononoke is a story about a young Prince named Ashitaka who is cursed for fighting a demon-god. His fate is to travel west (where the demon came from) and to see "with eyes unclouded by hate." What begins as a simple journey of discovery quickly turns into a crusade to end the warring between the humans of IronTown, led by Lady Eboshi, and the mercenaries sent by the Emporer to kill the great Forrest God, and the animal gods of the woods. The story centers on mainly Ashitaka, but a lot on San, Princess Mononoke herself, a human girl raised by the wolf-god Morro. San is fighting on the side of the animal gods, of course, to prevent the humans from destroying all the forrests (as so many forrests in the past have been destroyed). But can Ashitaka get San and the humans to stop fighting, can he prevent the war from escalating, can he save the great forrest god?
This has got to be one of the best Anime movies ever created, Miyazaki (creator of "Nausicca of the Wind Valley") delivers another instant masterpiece. Mononoke has sweeping scenes of gorgeous wilderness, incredible action scenes that blow our mind (My personal favorite is watching the arrow fly at Ashitaka early in the film from his point of view!) and simply awesome character movements and depth. The story is both engaging and quick moving, deep but simple to follow. To date this is the best selling anime in Japan's history, bested in theaters only by the movie "Titanic."
